Thank you to everyone who played along with yesterday’s running survey! I enjoyed getting to know more about my readers.
If you regularly read my little blog, you are familiar with Charlie our puggle. He’s that cute little bundle of fluff that loves to run, snuggle, and eat chicken. In today’s post I want to share some fun facts about Charlie!
1. Charlie is a rescue.
When Ryan and I decided we were ready to adopt a dog (read: when Ryan conceded to my begging that we get a puppy), we knew we wanted a pug mix but we also wanted a rescue. As fate would have it, my mom found a dog up for adoption on Petfinder in Dayton, OH, where I was working on my master’s degree. The weekend before finals, we were able to adopt Charlie. And then I spent all of finals week trying to get an excited little puppy to nap long enough for me to write a few 20 page papers and complete a Hebrew exam. I now understand why parents of young children are exhausted.
Charlie’s story before we adopted him is sad, which makes us so happy that we were able to rescue him and give him a
spoiled life good home. Charlie was from a breeder in Ohio who decided that breeding was too expensive and dumped the puppies he/she hadn’t yet sold at a gas station. The gas station owner called a person who operated a labrador/German shepherd rescue, and they came and picked up Charlie and took him to the farm where the rescue was stationed. To this day, Charlie possesses an intense infatuation with labs, golden retrievers, and German shepherds, which is probably because he spent a couple weeks with a bunch of them at the rescue.
2. We have a voice for Charlie.
I don’t know when or how, but Ryan and I have come up for a voice for Charlie and use it to speak for him. It probably comes from the fact in grad school and now as a housewife/freelance writer I work from home and spend all day with Charlie.
3. Charlie loves to lick people’s noses.
Whenever we have friends staying over, we have to warn them that Charlie loves to lick noses. No one believes us until they wake up at six in the morning to Charlie sticking his tongue up their nose. It’s the weirdest and grossest thing but it’s how he shows affection.
4. Charlie’s favorite foods are chicken, cheese, cauliflower, carrots, and celery.
Charlie goes crazy whenever we roast a chicken or turkey and we usually cave and give him some. It’s normal for dogs to love chicken, especially pugs who can be greedy about food. Charlie has an strange love for cauliflower, so much so that he will beg for it when I’m chopping some to cook with dinner. He eats the stalks of cauliflower, the ends of celery, and pieces of carrots as if they were doggy candy.
5. Charlie howls like a beagle.
One day, we decided to teach Charlie how to howl, since he is part beagle and beagles love to howl. At first, he was nervous and shy about it, but soon he learned to let loose and howl when we would howl. Now, he wants to howl every time Ryan comes home from work. He will jump, bark, and not rest until he gets to howl with his daddy. Our neighbors must love us.
