Happy Friday! This weekend is an exciting weekend for us – Ryan runs his first half marathon on Sunday! As we eagerly anticipate that, today I want to share with you some of my favorite things from this week. At the end of the post, I have an exciting giveaway for you! 

First off, I want to express my most heartfelt prayers for the residents of Washington and Oregon who are being affected by the wildfires and for those in Florida and the Carribean who have been or will be hit by Hurricane Irma. 


Panera bagels have been one of my favorite treats since I was a little kid and Panera was just a place down the street called Saint Louis Bread Company. Last week I indulged in them not once but twice and let me tell you, that only made me want them more.

On our way to my doctor’s appointment, we stopped at Panera so Ryan could get breakfast and coffee and they informed us that we had a free bagel. We got a blueberry bagel so I could eat right after my appointment and let me tell you, after fasting for a few hours during marathon training, nothing tastes better than carbs in the form of soft chewy bread. The next day, after my 15 mile long run of hills, hills, and more hills, I got a whole wheat bagel with honey walnut cream cheese. 

Also, don’t you like the selfie arm reflected in my sunglasses? 


Ryan gifted me with a couple pairs of shoes for my birthday – some Born ankle boots with arch support and these Saucony Freedoms. I adore the chroma coloring of these shoes (my newest pair of Kinvaras is also in chroma). The Freedoms have a springy, soft ride that worked equally well on an easy run and a speed workout.

“Meet the Man Who Just Destroyed the Appalachian Trail Speed Record” from Runner’s World. 

26-year-old Joe McConaughy (who holds the speed record for hiking the PCT) hiked the AT in 45 days, 12 hours, and 15 minutes – beating the previous supported thru-hike record by 10 hours. McConaughy covered approximately 48 miles per day with a 25-lb pack, carrying 3-4 days of food and water before restocking. The AT is a total of 2189 miles and over 500,000 feet of elevation change. 

I cannot even fathom his feat. Self-supported thru-hikes are incredibly demanding, as you are in charge of your own food, water, pack, and navigation. You deal with all sorts of elements and injuries, especially on the AT which is notoriously buggy and humid. His accomplishment is simply incredible. For comparison, the average thru-hiker takes 5-7 months to complete the AT.

Work Out

My latest Weekly Workout for Runkeeper is a hard-steady-hard combo run. This 30-minute workout sandwiches a steady state effort (approximately marathon pace) with short and fast intervals. If you can’t do a long workout at marathon pace, this combination teaches you how to run that pace on tired legs and then run faster at the end.

Ryan’s company The Gear Well recently collaborated with a graphic designer to release our new Argyle Mountain shirt! The fabric is a cotton tri-blend that is soft and breathable. I’m wearing the women’s cut, which is fitted and true-to-size – no awkward bagginess. This is one of those shirts that I reach for as soon as it’s washed.

  1. I love bagels and grew up eating one like every day when I lived in NY. That must have been hard to even walk into panera while you were fasting! Im still bouncing between shoes- mostly the Launch and Pure Flow. Have a great weekend!

  2. I crave a good ol’ bagel every so often. I have a patient that goes to NYC often and always brings me back authentic bagels. He’s the best! I shared the story of the new AT record too. That’s just incredible!

  3. I love the Saucony Freedom and have been resisting getting the Chroma versions. Also those shirts are cute and I am seriously considering the Outdoorsy AF.

  4. I love Panera’s cinnamon crunch bagels, but I see that they have a new pumpkin pie bagel – think I’ll have to give that a try!

  5. I haven’t had a Panera bagel, or any bagel, in forever. I guess I’m past due for one now. I bet it tasted really good after you had to fast for bloodwork though, or after a training run. I just don’t crave a lot of breads lately because it’s still pretty warm here. I’m sure I’ll eat more bagels when it’s cooler out and Fall finally arrives… Panera does have good food in general and you can always find one. I like that.

    It looks like we won’t get as much from Irma as previously thought, at least. But my heart goes out for Fla., Ga., and the Caribbean. This is a serious storm.

    I really love the Washington State tee in blue!

  6. Debating between Outdoorsy AF and the argyle, but the argyle wins thanks to that fit and neck hole!

    As for weekend plans, we’re hitting up the Redmond market as always and then hopefully going out for a trail running/mushroom foraging combo since we have grandparents visiting who can watch the kids! #pnwdate

  7. Yum! It has been FAR too long since I have had a bagle from Panera! I’ve always been a fan of plain bagles with some peanut butter and banana slices on top – a quick, simple breakfast or snack!

  8. You should try the bread from Panera. We get the Asiago Ciabatta bread and dunk it in black truffle oil. Omg.

    Shirts look awesome as well! I like the bear hug because my nickname is bear and I love hugging lol
