First off, thank you everyone for all the kind and supportive comments each week as I continue on marathon training. All the encouragement means so much to me!
Recently, I was contacted to try Eat Nakd natural protein bars from Natural Balance Foods. Natural Balance Foods is a newer British company that is devoted to providing healthy and delicious snacks made entirely of whole foods. As a proponent of whole foods and a healthy diet, I jumped at the opportunity and eagerly awaited my sampler Eat Nakd Bars in the mail.
A bit about how I eat: while I do not prescribe to any particular diet, I try to eat as many whole foods as possible. Most of my grocery shopping is done in the produce, meat, dairy, or bulk organics aisles of the grocery store. I make my own sandwich breads, pancakes, tortillas, etc from scratch so I know exactly what ingredients are going into it, as I try to avoid added sugars, soy, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives. While I’m not 100% perfect in my diet, I do avoid many pre-packaged items. Because of my way of eating, energy and snack bars are not normally stocked in my pantry.
The exception, however, is natural protein bars such as the Eat Nakd Bars. Because they are made from fruits and nuts and sweetened only with natural fruit extract or cocoa powder, Eat Nakd Bars provide a quick on-the-go snack that fit my criteria of no weird ingredients. In addition of being made from whole foods, the Eat Nakd Bars taste good!
The Eat Nakd Protein Crunch Bars are natural protein bars that get their extra protein and texture from soya crunchies (crunchy soybeans). While I typically try to avoid soy because of GMOs and phytoestrogens, these bars are GMO-free and the soy is in a very natural form (which means less phytoestrogens than in highly-processed soy), so I didn’t mind it in the bars. It actually added a pleasant crunch and satisfying protein!
The Eat Nakd Bars are vegan and dairy, wheat, and gluten free, which means they can be a part of anyone’s diet (unless you have a nut allergy, as I believe all the bars contain nuts).
I drive about 7 miles to go running most days, but Seattle traffic can make this commute last up to 30 minutes! (Seriously, this is the one major downside of living in Seattle. The traffic is unfathomable.) As I discussed yesterday, it is incredibly vital for recovery to replenish glycogen stores about 30 minutes after a workout. When I have a particularly long or hard workout, such as my marathon goal pace tempo runs, I pack an Eat Nakd Bar in my car so I can have a carbohydrate-rich snack immediately after my run.
I enjoyed the Eat Nakd Rhubarb and Custard Bar after my tempo run last week. I loved the flavor of this one! It reminded me of some of the desserts I sampled when I traveled to the British Isles.
Ryan and I do a lot of hiking, and spending several hours outside works up an appetite. When we went hiking to the Bridal Veil Falls this weekend, (more on that in Thursday’s post!), we packed a couple of the protein-rich Eat Nakd Crunch Bars. We snacked on the Eat Nakd Apple Protein and Cocoa Protein Crunch Bars at the top of the hike. These bars helped us sustain our energy for the hike down without weighing us down—definitely a win-win. The taste was superb, especially as the Apple Crunch bar had bits of dried apple—yum! Ryan enjoyed the taste and texture of the bars as well.
The Eat Nakd Fruit and Nut Bars come in 9 different flavors: Cocoa Mint, Cocoa Orange, Cocoa Delight, Ginger Bread (one of my favorites!), Pecan Pie, Caffe Mocha, Berry Delight, Rhubarb and Custard, and Cashew Cookie. The Eat Nakd Protein Crunch Bars are available in Strawberry, Banana, Apple, and Cocoa. All of the bars have approximately 110-160 calories, which makes them a great snack or pre/post workout fuel.
Overall, I highly recommend these bars, especially if you are looking for healthy, natural, and portable snacks to fuel running, cycling, swimming, hiking, or any other outdoor activity! They also make a tasty snack that satiates a sweet tooth without adding tons of sugar to your diet. I especially enjoy the chocolate flavors as an afternoon snack!
