A Runner’s Guide to Whole Grains

A Runner's Guide to Whole Grains

Despite the popularity of grain-free fad diets like Paleo and high-fat/low-carb, whole grains are a powerhouse of nutrition for athletes. If anything, eliminating grains from your diets removes a nutrient-dense source of carbohydrates from your diet. Whole grains provide iron, B-vitamins (such as niacin and folate), magnesium, fiber, carbohydrates to fuel your workouts, and protein. Why are nutrients such as iron, B-vitamins, and magnesium so important for runners? Iron supports your ...

20 Sweet and Savory Recipes to Make This Fall

20 Sweet and Savory Fall Recipes

Fall reignites my love of cooking. I spend summer eating the same dishes - salads, tacos, grilled chicken, and burger bowls - because of the heat. I don't want to spend hours over the stove (or even turn on the oven sometimes) nor do I want to eat a hearty meal such as chili.  The moment the leaves turn colors, I am ready to dive into large bowls of soup, pumpkin treats, and everything and anything squash. Fall produce - squash of all varieties, apples, sweet potatoes, kale, beets, ...

Sourdough Whole Wheat Pita

Back in January, I resolved this year would be the year I figure out sourdough bread baking. Six months later, and my sourdough starter is still going strong. I feel like I have begun to master my sandwich bread recipe and I’m getting more and more adventurous with other types of sourdough bread, including sourdough whole wheat pita bread.   Pita and hummus have been one of my favorite snacks since high school. ...

Whole Wheat Sourdough Bread

A few readers have asked for my recipe for homemade whole wheat sourdough bread, so here it is! I’ve tested this current version over and over again, and it consistently yields a well-risen, fluffy yet sturdy, and flavorful loaf - with minimal hands-on time required. A good loaf of homemade bread is both an ...

Kale Pesto Veggie Pizza

Kale Pesto Veggie Pizza

Greetings from Seattle, where it's always raining. Or at least, that's how it seems - as I write this on Wednesday, it's been raining for almost a week straight. A dreary shade of grey tints everything, including the photos I attempted to take of this pizza. There's absolutely no good light in our apartment right now.  The photos are less than stellar, but this kale pesto veggie pizza was so delicious that I couldn't not share the recipe with you, especially with St. ...
