Happy Friday! From wild blackberries to practically wild labraheelers, here are some of my favorite things from this week:
Eat
Ryan surprised me on Monday with freshly picked wild blackberries! It’s such a special treat, especially because picking wild blackberries involves plenty of thorns. The wild blackberries taste so tartly sweet and abound with so much more vibrant flavor than farmed berries (which I still adore and devour).
Listen
Lindsey Hein’s “I’ll Have Another” podcast consistently delivers engaging episodes, and her recent interview with Jess Hofheimer (Pace of Me) captivated my attention for the entire 97 minutes. Jess discusses her struggles with overtraining and sacrificing health for race times. Whether or not you struggle to find balance in your training, this episode is well worth your listen.
Read
I was perusing the New York Times Phys. Ed. section when this article attracted my attention: “The Dogs We Run For.” I barely read the second paragraph without tears dropping onto my laptop, but the article is so beautiful and poignant. The author shares the depth of grief she experienced after her dog died, grief so deep that she stopped running, and how the adoption of a new dog and running buddy helped her heal.
Run
New and experienced runners alike benefit from good nutrition – regardless of what type of diet you follow. In my latest article for Runkeeper, I share simple ways that runners can adjust their nutrition to improve their running, such as eating more colorful fruits and vegetables and adjusting daily intake based on training.
Play
After backpacking to Lake Valhalla last Saturday with the heat and smoke bearing down on us, we played with Ollie and Charlie to cool down. Charlie gleefully splashed in the shallow end, while Ollie embarked on a journey to see how far he could swim. Ever since his transformation into an adventure dog, Ollie has been pushing the limits of how far we will let him swim. Ignoring our calls, Ollie swam up to a SUPer in the lake! You can see him paddling fiercely in the top right of the photo.
What podcasts have you been enjoying lately?

We are on the same wavelength this week! I intently listened to Jess and Lindsey podcast this week too. It was a really great one that I think anyone could get something valuable from. We are lucky enough to have wild blackberry bushes in our yard. Last night we picked TONS! So much better than store bought. It’s hard not to eat them all at one time but I like to squirrel away some in the freezer for winter. Happy Friday!
Wild blackberry bushes in your own yard sounds so amazing. I would have a hard time not eating them all either. Happy Friday!
OMG that is hilarious about Ollie!! Star continues her love of swimming but, since she currently doesn’t love strangers, I have to keep her on a leash down by the water unless no one is around. *sigh* I have to read that article about running with your dog! And you’re the second person I have heard praise that podcast with Jess so now I have to listen! Thanks and enjoy your weekend…
Oh that is so cute how much Star loves to swim! Ollie loves strangers and friends and family a little too much. He wants to become friends with everyone he meets, but not everyone feels comfortable having a muscular black dog with a slightly crazy look in this eyes bounding or swimming toward them! You should definitely listen to the podcast. Have a great weekend!
I love blackberries, but I hate the seeds in my teeth. Raspberries are actually my favorite! Ridley is like Ollie–once the sights are locked on, the ears stop working. I think we are going to need to put a shock collar on her.
The wild ones do not have as many seeds, or at least out here! Raspberries are so good also. We had good luck with citronella spray collar with our boys – no shock, but a spray of nasty smelling stuff right in their face to jolt them into focusing!
I’m a big blueberry fan. I like blueberry in most anything and of course, alone. Can’t say that I’ve ever eaten many blackberries but probably would if they were fresh and local (we don’t really grow them much around here). I’m glad you’ve had a good week!
Blueberries are amazing! I could eat them by the pint if I let myself.
I swear I’m still not over my dog dying and that was over 13 years ago. I never got another dog and became the opposite of a dog lover once Cindy died. I was a total mess for a while there, it’s heart breaking to lose a pet for sure.
It is heart breaking. One of my dogs died just a few weeks after I started college, and it was harder than any homesickness or transition.
I love all the berries, but strawberries are probably my favorites 🙂
I haven’t listened to any podcasts consistently, but I want to give the one you mentioned a try. I have listened to some episodes of Pod saves America (political podcast) which I enjoyed.
