Happy Friday! From wild blackberries to practically wild labraheelers, here are some of my favorite things from this week:
Ryan surprised me on Monday with freshly picked wild blackberries! It’s such a special treat, especially because picking wild blackberries involves plenty of thorns. The wild blackberries taste so tartly sweet and abound with so much more vibrant flavor than farmed berries (which I still adore and devour).
Lindsey Hein’s “I’ll Have Another” podcast consistently delivers engaging episodes, and her recent interview with Jess Hofheimer (Pace of Me) captivated my attention for the entire 97 minutes. Jess discusses her struggles with overtraining and sacrificing health for race times. Whether or not you struggle to find balance in your training, this episode is well worth your listen.
I was perusing the New York Times Phys. Ed. section when this article attracted my attention: “The Dogs We Run For.” I barely read the second paragraph without tears dropping onto my laptop, but the article is so beautiful and poignant. The author shares the depth of grief she experienced after her dog died, grief so deep that she stopped running, and how the adoption of a new dog and running buddy helped her heal.
New and experienced runners alike benefit from good nutrition – regardless of what type of diet you follow. In my latest article for Runkeeper, I share simple ways that runners can adjust their nutrition to improve their running, such as eating more colorful fruits and vegetables and adjusting daily intake based on training.
After backpacking to Lake Valhalla last Saturday with the heat and smoke bearing down on us, we played with Ollie and Charlie to cool down. Charlie gleefully splashed in the shallow end, while Ollie embarked on a journey to see how far he could swim. Ever since his transformation into an adventure dog, Ollie has been pushing the limits of how far we will let him swim. Ignoring our calls, Ollie swam up to a SUPer in the lake! You can see him paddling fiercely in the top right of the photo.
