Friday Thrive

Happy Friday! This week has brought days of sunshine to the Seattle area, which makes the whole week feel more vibrant and exciting. Beyond the sunshine, these five things are what I’m thriving on this week – from new books to peace of mind found in puppy toys.

Read

After listening to Jay Dicharry’s interview on the Run to the Top Podcast and receiving book recommendations of some of you, I purchased Anatomy for Runners. My inner academic is always excited by a running book that includes a bibliography of cited studies (The Endurance Diet did the same!). I have only read the first two chapters in terms of content – it’s a dense read – and the exercises in the final chapter have given me some good ideas for how to improve my weak areas.

Eat

A couple Friday ago, I shared an article from Outside in which Elise Kopecky provided a recipe for burger bowls – grassfed beef burger (no fillers, just beef and seasonings), brown rice, roasted vegetables, and avocado. We have now eaten these burger bowls twice in the past ten days – they are a delicious, satisfying, and nutritionally-packed dinner.

Drink

Some people love trying different flavors of ice cream or wine; I love sampling varieties of craft beer. (I still like wine, but I’m almost exclusively a cabernet sauvignon drinker). I’ve recently tried a few red ales and enjoyed them. I usually prefer hoppy beers such as IPAs, so this Deschutes India Style Red Ale offered the best of both the caramel flavor of red ales with the herbal flavor of hoppy beers.

Run

I enjoy receiving my StrideBox shipment each month, especially when the samples involve food such as the Picky Bar and Viki’s Granola in this month’s box. When you sign up for StrideBox, you receive a monthly box of samples of all things running – fuel and sports drink samples, snacks, personal care items, and gear.

Disclaimer: I receive a complimentary monthly StrideBox in exchange for promotion of their product. I wouldn’t recommend to you any product or service that I don’t find valuable and reliable. I am continually impressed with the quality of product with StrideBox and with this customer service.

Play

Both Ollie and Charlie have the tendency to dismember, de-fluff, and destroy any stuffed toy that they encounter. Vacuuming up piles of fluff quickly gets tiring, and I’m sure those of you who have dogs can relate. These Benebones are my sanity savers (since the dogs often burst into my home office like those kids in the CNN video) – Charlie and Ollie will chew them for hours without leaving a mess. If you have a dog that is as insane active and playful as these two, I highly recommend these – I ordered them off Amazon and peace in the form of a chew-toy was delivered within a couple days.

  1. Ive been getting a complimentary StrideBox each month too and I really enjoy them! Especially with 2 runners in the house, everything gets put to good use.
Anatomy for Runners is still one of my favorite books and I refer back to it all the time. I downloaded it on my Kindle, but I have thought about buying a hard copy just because it would be easier to reference.
    Have a great weekend!

  2. I get those stride boxes as well and was excited to see the picky bar! I love picky bars, they are great before runs and sit well in my tummy. That burger bowl looks like a fun idea rather than just a burger on a bun, too.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  3. I got a 6 month Stridebox subscription as a gift last year. All in all it was pretty cool and there were a few things I really liked (one month I got an arm band for my phone that I still use!), but overall, it was just way more fuel/drink/snack stuff than I could possibly consume or want, and I ended up not using most of that stuff :-(. I wished it were heavier on the gear and lighter on the fuel.

    That burger bowl looks awesome!

  4. I’m reading Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult and a book for people living with someone who has borderline personality disorder and it’s called “Stop Walking on Eggshells.” It’s such a helpful book, like whoa.

  5. I love getting my StrideBox each month!! This month was full of yummy snacks and some cool hydration mix! I am interested in reading those two books you mentioned! Happy Friday Laura!

  6. I got Anatomy for Runners a couple years ago…I was good about doing the exercises for quite a while but then slacked off. I should get back to doing them!
