In the middle of March, I started receiving email after email. “My race was cancelled. I understand due to the severity of the pandemic, but I am also disappointed because my training was going so well.”
I quickly threw together a free, informal virtual race for my coaching clients if they wanted to cash in on their hard work. There weren’t any fancy medals or swag that larger virtual races offer; just simple solo racing with a club on Strava for community support. This post highlights how my coaching clients did in the race, which occurred over the weekends of April 4 and 5 and May 2 and 3.
Janessa ran the 5K in both April and May. Her finish time was 39:04 for April – and she improved to a 38:38 (and ran continuously) in May!
Marian ran the 5K as her first “race” back from a fractured foot, with a time of 37:54!
Jess M ran her first sub-30 min 5K in April with a time of 29:01!
Mariah raced the 5K in 34:56!
Chelsey raced a 24:27 minute 5K at 26.5 weeks pregnant!
Caroline B raced the 5K in a time of 47:11!
Courtnie raced the 5K in 27:04!
Lori ran the 5K as part of her rebuilding after injury, with a time of 31:05!
Mark ran the 10K in a blazing time of 41:18 for the April 10K – and then bested that time with his second fastest 10K in 40:51.
Marcus ran a 43:38 minute 10K – in the middle of a 14 mile long run!
Eric ran the 10K as a fitness assessment, with a time of 52:38 in April and 51:32 in May!
Jess M ran the 10K in May in a time of 58:58!
Caroline L ran the April 10K in a time of 57:39!
Pete raced the April 10K in 58:09, with 328 feet of elevation!
Sam raced the 10K with a time of 1:19 in April and 1:16 in May!
Shari raced the 10K in 1:13!
Michelle ran the May 10K in 52:13!
Jennifer ran the 10K in May with a time of 57:22!
Laura A ran the 10K in May in a time of 53:36!
Jessica G ran a 53:36 10K as part of a virtual Ironman challenge!

Several others are preparing for virtual half marathons in the upcoming weeks of May. I’m continuing to offer the virtual races through the summer. Runners thrive in the opportunity to push their minds and bodies. These races provide those opportunities, as well as fitness assessments and variety to the monotony of maintenance training or base building.
