Life Lately and Weekly Workouts (February 16)

Hello, everyone! How was your weekend?

We had a pretty lazy weekend of reading and watching movies because we had yet another snow storm! Winds got up to 45 miles per hour and were blowing snow around in little snow tornadoes. It was also approximately zero degrees out for most of the weekend. How long until spring? I’m starting to forget what life without mountains of snow is like.

Thankfully this coming week we get a break from Midwest winter weather because we’re visiting Seattle! Bring on the fresh seafood, ocean air, and all the coffee.

I finally finished my second book of 2015. I have a bad habit of reading more than one book at a time. I probably got this habit from college and grad school when I was always reading five or so books at once. This week I finally finished The $100 Startup, which Ryan read back in January. I really enjoyed both the writing style and the practical advice of this book—great for anyone looking to start and grow their own microbusiness!

Ryan and I went out for chips and guac and some drinks on Friday. We both totally crave Mexican food in winter, probably because Mexican tastes so summer-y. Avocados are out of season around here and we’re not eating them as much, so the guac totally hit the spot.

For Valentine’s Day we stayed in, watched No Strings Attached (which we saw in theaters on our first Valentine’s Day four years ago!), and ate this delicious pizza. I made a simple whole wheat crust and we topped it with tomato sauce, spinach, mozzarella, and nitrate-free pork salami cut into the shape of hearts. So good!

Despite the bitter cold and intense wind this weekend, I was able to get outside for a couple runs earlier this week, which felt amazing. I don’t mind running in colder temperatures as long as there’s not snow and ice all over the path. It’s only when the wind chill drops below zero or the sidewalks are covered in snow and ice that I stay inside. Living near Lake Michigan just means that sub-zero wind chills, mountains of snow, and ice-covered everything is more common than not in winter. I’ll take it over boiling hot summers!

I’m really itching to sign up for a spring race, and I went ahead and made the leap last night! I signed up for the STL GO! Half Marathon on April 12. It works well because we can stay with my family and it’s a familiar area (which I prefer for races). They made the course less hilly than in previous years, which sold me on choosing it as my spring race.

This week I got in a bunch of great running workouts but slacked a bit on strength and flexibility training.
Monday: 7 miles easy outside on a hilly route, 59:30 (8:30/mile)
Tuesday: 8 miles on the treadmill in 63:30, with 5 miles at tempo pace (7:37/mile)
Wednesday: 7 miles easy outside, 58:22 (8:20/mile), with my last mile in 7:45; followed by some squats, push-ups, planks, and foam rolling
Thursday: 3 miles recovery on the treadmill, 27:19 (9:06/mile) and about 15 minutes of strength training
Friday: 12 miles on the treadmill, 0.5-2% incline, 1:40:00 (8:20/mile pace), with the last two miles at 7:30/mile
Saturday: 20 minutes recovery yoga video from Runner’s World

37 miles total

I’m really ready to start doing long runs outside again! It seems like every Friday (my current long run day) and even the whole weekend is super cold with lots of snowfall.

Questions of the Day:
How was your weekend? Did you do anything special for Valentine’s Day?
What was your best run from last week?

  1. This weather has been pretty ridiculous! I don’t mind the cold but below freezing is rough. And I feel like every bit of snow we get is followed by a cold front so everything freezes. We are supposed to get 5-8 inches tonight, which will be our first significant snowfall of the year. Kind of crazy considering how rough its been so far!

  2. I have also been slacking on strength/cross training. Nice job getting out there for a solid week of running though!

Oh, Seattle! Enjoy 🙂 That reminds me, I’ll drop you a line tonight with some places I really liked when I was there.
