Mile Markers: Closing Time

Mile Markers: Closing Time

Last week moved into our first house! Our original intention wasn’t to purchase so soon after moving back to Indiana, but it worked out so well because we love our house. It’s a beautiful house in a location we dreamed of living in back years ago when we first lived in Indiana. As newlyweds, we used to drive through this neighborhood, oohing and ahhing and dreaming. The house is along the local network of running trails and close to a park for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Even with a busy week of closing and moving, I still managed to get in a decent week of cross-training. Last week closed in on the end of my long restriction from running. Especially since I was able to walk around for over an hour without my boot, I am now cleared to run!

Mile Markers: Closing Time

Monday: 50 minutes pool running

I started off Monday strong with an early morning pool run. I turned one of my favorite outdoor fartlek workouts into intervals in the pool. After a warm-up of 10 minutes, I did four repeats of 1 min hard – 1min easy – 1 min hard – 1 min easy – 2 min hard – 2 min easy, then cooled down until I reached 50 minutes.

Tuesday: Unintentional Rest Day

I find it comical how I would go run in 15-degree wind chills no problem, but I balk at the idea of driving to the gym in those temperatures. So I planned to go with Ryan after work, and then the final viewing of our house was scheduled. We quickly packed gym bags to go to the YMCA after our viewing…and then upon arriving at the Y, realized we had forgotten essential items. So instead, we went home, cracked some beers, and packed up our kitchen.

Wednesday: 50 minutes pool running

Tempo runs are my favorite running workouts, so it makes sense I would enjoy tempo intervals in the pool. The main workout was 5 x 5 min at tempo effort, 1 min easy, with a 10-minutes each for warm-up and cooldown (one of the workouts from my pool running post).

Thursday: 45 minutes pool running

Midwesterners are some of the nicest people I have ever met. I shared a lane with another pool runner and she invited me to the weekly pool running class at the Y each week. Since I was sharing a lane, I kept my workout relatively steady, with a few one-minute pick-ups sprinkled in.

Friday: 20 min arc trainer and 20 min strength train

With a busy day ahead, I opted to cross-train at the gym rather than in the pool. Pool running is a great workout but it does require a longer time commitment. I figured I could load my foot a bit more since I was just a few days away from when I can start running. I did 20 minutes on the arc trainer. My lunges burned from the effort! While the pool provides a good workout, it doesn’t quite get your heart rate up in the same way.

After the arc trainer, I complete a short strength workout: bicep curls to shoulder press, reverse flyes, banded glute bridges, banded clamshells, and deadbugs using a resistance band.

On Friday afternoon, we closed on our first house!

Saturday & Sunday: Moving!

Technically, this was a rest day in the sense of no formal exercise. However, Ryan and I were both on our feet most of the day. Movers moved the heavy, large items for us. We spent the remainder of the day shuttling items from our third-floor apartment to house. All those flights of stairs add up over the course of a day but thankfully my foot handled them well. By Sunday, we had almost completely moved into our house!

All the moving required lots of coffee and some special treats. I have such a weakness for anything with crumb topping.

  1. What an exciting week! Buying your first house is huge. My MIL bought us an ornament for our Christmas tree years ago when we bought our first house. It was right around this time too. Every time we put it on the tree I get a little sentimental. Enjoy!

  2. Yay!!! Congratulations on the house! That is such a monumental, life changing event and I couldn’t be happier for both of you!! I’m also so glad it coincided with getting the ok to run 🙂 And there’s a pool running class at your Y? That is amazing.
Enjoy moving in and all the baked goods you can handle. You’ve earned it!

  3. Congrats on the new house!!! And having running trails behind it? Score! What a great week for you. Now that you are cleared to run, you can try those trails out! And you don’t even have to drive to get there… :p

  4. Congrats on the home ownership. You’ll have a lot of fun decorating…and redecorating…over the years. It’s wonderful it close to running/hiking trails and a ski park too. Good luck as you ease back into running this week. Thanks for linking!
