Beginner’s Guide: Ten Motivational Running Quotes

Sometimes the hardest part about running is starting. A warm bed can be more comfortable than the chilly air at 5 AM; the comfort of the sofa after work can be more inviting than the pounding the pavement after work. It is important to have internal motivation for why you run, but sometimes you need the extra inspiration to take that step out the door when the weather is bad, you’re tired, or you’re still forming the habit of running. Here are ten motivational running quotes for runners of all levels, especially beginners seeking extra motivation as they become runners.

1. “A runner is real when she takes the first step.” – Clarissa Pinkola Estes, American poet

2. “All runners, at one time or another, are beginners.” – from The NYRR Book of Running

3. “A runner must run with dreams in his heart.” – Emil Zatopek, Olympic gold medalist runner

4. “You don’t have to be fast. But you’d better be fearless.” – Christopher McDougall, Born to Run

5. “I often hear someone say, I’m not a real runner. We are all runners, some just run faster than others. I never met a fake runner.” – Bart Yasso

6. “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” – John Bingham

7. “The biggest mistake an athlete can make is to be afraid of making one.” – L. Ron Hubbard

8. “Believe that you can run farther or faster. Believe that you’re young enough, old enough, strong enough, and so on to accomplish everything you want to do. Don’t let worn-out beliefs stop you from moving beyond yourself.” – John Bingham

9. “Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of.” – Patti Sue Plumer

10. “If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.” – John Bingham

A bonus quote, but this time for laughs: from our favorite Parks and Recreation character, Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt):

“Everything hurts. Running is impossible.”

running is impossible
